MHS was established by Bernie Graham in 2006 and is committed to facilitating training that both raises awareness of mental health problems and also provides a means of addressing these serious health concerns for all organisations. The training is appropriate for customer focussed businesses and organisations, particularly for those providing care and support.
Mental health problems are far more common than most people realise:
The 2016 Mental health and wellbeing in England: Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (NHS) found in the week of the study:
17% of adults in England reported experiencing symptoms of common mental health issues (such as anxiety and depression) in the previous week
In 2017 The Centre for Mental Health study “Mental Health at Work” presents new estimates of the cost to employers of mental health problems at work and show the aggregate costs to employers come to £34.9 billion, equivalent to about £1,300 for every employee in the UK workforce.
The business costs of mental ill health comprise:
- £10.6 billion in sickness absence;
- £21.2 billion in reduced productivity when at work (presenteeism); and
- £3.1 billion in replacing staff who leave their jobs for mental health reasons.
