How MHS Can Help

Mental Health Awareness is good for your staff and your business!

WHY MHS? Since establishing MHS in 2006, Bernie Graham has delivered training to a wide range of organisations who continue to use him and MHS for their training needs in the mental health field. Established clients include SHELTER and MITIE.  Here's what they had to say about MHS:

"Both courses offered by MHS are excellent and meet all the stated objectives. Feedback from staff was hugely positive and they are putting into practice what they have learned to very good effect. Highly recommended"

Gareth Gilleeney, Learning & Development Manager, SHELTER.

"As the first organisation from the private sector to undertake this training and to have the results assessed, it has raised the profile of MITIE and has been proven enormously beneficial to the staff operating the Real Apprentice Programme*. It makes sense in business terms and is as important as managing physical health"

Jane James, Employment Regeneration Director, MITIE.

INDEPENDENT EVALUATIONS:
THESE STUDIES SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES:

The MHFA certificated course has been the subject of two independent evaluations in both the public (Bath University) and private sectors (University of Westminster). Bernie Graham of MHS delivered the training for both these evaluations.

The results were extremely positive. Significant results (p<0.01) were found for all quantitative measures, showing an increase in knowledge and confidence (in administering mental health first aid) and an improvement in the perception of mental health issues.” Bath University Public Sector study.

Participants gave an overwhelmingly positive response to the training which suggests that MHFA training can be just as appropriate for private sector clients as it is for the public sector. Participants perceived it as highly relevant and valuable” University of Westminster Private Sector study.

The MITIE Real Apprentice Programme won the Innovation Award at the European Employee Volunteering Awards for improving the employability of skills of people who face barriers getting back into work.

INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT:

Bernie Graham is passionate about raising awareness of mental health issues in all sections of our society. As a member of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, he keeps abreast with the latest knowledge and developments in the Mental Health field. In 2010, in response to the increased concern and prevalence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) particularly amongst the Armed Forces and the Ex-Service community, Bernie completed the clinical programme at the US Government's Department of Veteran Affairs, National Centre for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, San Francisco. His attendance at the clinical programme has enabled him to develop the TRAUMATIC STRESS REACTION (TSR) course.

As well as being particularly relevant to members of the Armed Forces, Ex-Service communities, emergency first response services and their families and friends, the TSR course is also designed for those supporting people who have experienced other forms of psychological trauma.

Bernie has also developed a STAFF and CARER SELF CARE WORKSHOP which aims to reduce the potential for secondary stress reactions amongst staff/carers supporting and/or caring for people with a high level of need. The course gives participants a greater understanding of, and helps them to recognise, the symptoms of secondary stress. Participants will also gain the knowledge and skills to deal with these difficulties and where to seek further support. At just 3 hours, the course is exceptional value both in terms of staff time, cost and the significant benefits to both individuals and organisations.
